Muriel Moyra Gillespie
March 16, 1927 - January 9, 2020

With deep sorrow and much love we announce the passing of Muriel Moyra Gillespie (nee Gibson), on January 9, 2020, at the age of 92 years.

Muriel is survived by her husband of 68 years William (Bill), their four children; Ted Gillespie (Louise), Patty Buttar (Ross), Micky Kusler (Darcy), and Brian Gillespie (Paulette), as well as eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters Wilma, Norah, Winnifred, and her brother Don. She was predeceased by her older brother Bob and her parents Moyra and William Gibson.

Muriel was born and raised in Delia, Alberta. She attended the U of A and graduated with a degree in Nursing. It was while at university that she was courted by a young man on a motorcycle, Bill Gillespie. They were married in 1951. Muriel worked as a Rural Public Health nurse, took time off to raise her four children and then returned to work as a Registered Nurse at the U of A Health Sciences Clinic.

Muriel was an active member of the Engineers' Wives club, a gourmet club, an investment club, and enjoyed volunteering with the Friends of University Hospital. She also enjoyed golf and travel.

In her later years, Muriel enjoyed many activities including aquasize classes (5 days a week), singing with the St. Albert Singers (25+ years), and making greeting cards with her daughters in the PMS Club (Pretty Mean Stampers). She was able to continue these activities into her 90's. Muriel will be remembered as a kind, gentle person, who never complained, and whom everyone liked and loved. She has many, many friends who will miss and fondly remember her.

A memorial service was held at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in St Albert on February 8, 2020, at 2:00 pm. The church was full to capacity with all her friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made in Muriel's name to the Friends of University Hospital, or The Sturgeon Hospital Community Foundation.

The family wish to send special thanks to the staff at the St. Albert Sturgeon Hospital, for the care and compassion they showed to Muriel during her last days.
